mini sustained investigation

guiding question:

The world is run by the desire to consume, in that nothing we can have shipped to our front door will satiate the pain we all run from. The necessary steps to achieve such great levels of consumption involve creating great waste: waste to our ecosystem, waste to our bank accounts, and waste to our feelings. Oftentimes culture that necessitates waste is glamorized and approved of as a means to achieve aesthetic peace, but the filth and decay necessary to make it is overlooked. I want to juxtapose 21st century ideas of glamor and opulence with the creation of waste and show their innate connection to one another (from decay comes beauty and from beauty comes decay). I want to visually combine unfashionable symbols of waste (single use plastic, full trash bags, etc) with current ideas of fashionable human beauty.

reflection:
  • because of a lack in planning, glamor doesn't make any thematic appearance in the photos

  • the photos capture a satisfactory image of waste and garbage, but without a human subject and the presence of glamor, the photos do not live up to the guiding question.

  • through editing, the photos are more saturated and warmer

  • when using human subjects as the focal point with waste as the background, more opportunities open up to capture more unique perspectives and photographic techniques
